Other general duties include meeting the general public, answering questions and providing information on funeral and cremation information and other related topics, answering phones courteously and in a polite manner, assisting on funeral, memorial and other services or ceremonies as requested by funeral home clients and management.
Attendance at monthly staff meeting is expected.
The Funeral Services Assistant duties must be performed consistent with company mission and values and adherence to company policies and procedures.
JOBRESPONSIBILITIESLearns to arrange and conduct funeral and memorial ceremonies in a professional, organized and caring manner consistent with Company Policies and ProceduresAdheres to all Company and Regulatory requirementsCares for the deceased in a respectful manner while performing a variety of tasks which may include:
Removals and transfersLifting of deceased human remainsDressing and casketingCoordinating and assisting with funeral service and visitationDelivery of flowers, caskets, urn, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of client familiesSetting of chairs and the removal, proper care and storage of these itemsRemovals and transfersAssists with funeral services by:
Coordinating the parking of carsUsheringDriving funeral vehiclesAssisting at chapel and church servicesAssisting at the cemeteryDelivering flowers, caskets, urn, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of client familiesSetting up chairs and the removing, properly caring for and storing of these itemsParticipating at special functionsProvides aftercare in absence of Family Service Counselor.

DocumentationStationeryInformation on insurance, health benefits and pension,Pre-arrangements for next of kinCompletes and accurately prepares of all documents related to services, cremations, maintenance, and any other type of data entryAssists with general office duties such as preparing reports as neededAssists with the maintenance of vehicles, the facility and property; receive caskets and other funeral home supplies as well as place into inventory and carrying out any other responsibilities that may be reasonably delegated by managementAnswering phones, preparing reports as necessary and participating in staff meetingsPerforms other duties as assignedMINIMUM RequirementsEducationHigh School diploma or general equivalency degree (or diploma)Currently enrolled in a degree training program at an accredited mortuary college or technical school specializing in funeral service or mortuary scienceExperienceTypically requires 6 months of previous work experience in a customer service roleKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesGood driving record and valid driver's licensePrevious customer service and/or sales experience would be a definite assetKnowledge of computers and some software would be an asset, or willingness to learnAbove average communication skillsHigh level of compassion and integrityProblem solving skillsAbility to multi task and set prioritiesDetail orientedProfessional and team playerWork CONDITIONSWork EnvironmentWork indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather conditionsLimited amount of local and/or multiple location traveling requiredProfessional Dress is required when in contact with familiesWork PosturesFrequent, continuous periods of time standing, up 6 hours per daySitting continuously for many hours per day, up to 6 hours per dayClimbing stairs to access buildings frequentlyPhysical DemandsPhysical effort requiring manual dexterity is required, includes paperwork, calculators, computers and phone usageWork HoursPrepares for services to include delivering and setting up floral arrangements, chairs, caskets, urns, photos and other personal keepsakes or mementos of client families; ensures proper care and storage of any of these itemsPrepares documents related to services, cremations, maintenance, as directed by managementAssists with respectful preparation of remains of deceased, including dressing and lifting deceased, or operation of crematory, as permitted by law and in keeping with company regulationsPerforms office duties such as answering phones and operating fax machine, computer, multiline phone system, debit card machine, typewriter, postage meter and scale and stereo/video system.
Run errands such as for floral delivery, picking up of supplies, documents, etcServes as an usher and may park cars or perform any transportation requirements.
Drives Funeral Home vehicles for services and picking up familiesEnsures refreshments are available (where allowed by law)Assist with visitations, memorial and funeral services which may include; visitation and chapel set up, dressing and casketing remains, delivering family items and flowers.
Prepares documents related to services, cremations, maintenance etc.
